Cebu City currently has ten large universities each with a number of
college branches throughout the city and more than a dozen other schools
specializing in various courses.
Among these are:
University of San Carlos
The University of San Carlos (USC) is a private Catholic university in Cebu City which is administered and managed by the Society of the Divine Word
since 1935. It offers a Montessori preparatory academy, Basic
Education, 80 Undergraduate, and 85 Graduate programs, with a broad
spectrum of academic disciplines through its 8 colleges and 27
departments. The premier university in Cebu and one of the top 10
leading universities in the country ranked by the International / World
QS rating among the top 300 universities in Asia (only 2 universities in
the Visayas are cited; USC in Cebu City and Silliman Univ. in Dumaguete
City among world class universities in the Philippines).
University of San Jose Recoletos
The University of San Jose – Recoletos, formerly known as Colegio de
San Jose – Recoletos was founded in Cebu by the Order of Augustinian
Recollects in 1947. It has evolved from a small institution to being one
of the best schools in the province. Presently, the University is
chaired by Rev. Fr. Enrico Peter A. Silab, OAR.
It has three campuses – the main campus along Magallanes St., the
Basak Campus at Cebu South Road, Basak, and the newly-built Balamban
Campus at Arpili, Balamban. It also basic education, undergraduate and
graduate courses.
Cebu Normal University
Cebu Normal University is one of the oldest educational institutions
in the province. It was established as a provincial normal school in
1915, became an independent institution in 1924, a chartered college in
1976, and finally became a university in 1998. Currently the University
President is Marcelo T. Lopez.
It has three campuses – the main campus in Osmeña Boulevard, and the
other two campuses in Medellin and Balamban. It offers basic education
and college courses.
University of Cebu
University of Cebu was established in 1964 and is currently headed by
Atty. Augusto W. Go. It has four campuses – Main Campus at Colon St.,
Banilad Campus, UC-METC Campus at Alumnos St., Mambaling and
UC-LM(Lapu-Lapu/Mandaue) Campus near the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. They
offer basic education and undergraduate studies.
University of the Visayas
University of the Visayas was founded by the late Don Vicente Gullas
in 1919 and is now billed as the first university in Cebu. Their current
University President is Atty. Eduardo Gullas, D.P.A. The University has
eight campuses – the main campus at Colon St., the laboratory high
school in Pardo, Gullas Medical Center in Banilad, and the other
campuses in Punta Engaño, Lapulapu City, Mandaue, Toledo, Dalaguete,
Minglanilla, and Compostela. It offers basic education and college
courses.
Cebu Doctor's University
The Cebu Doctors' University
(formerly Cebu Doctors' College) was granted university status on
November 2004. It is the only school in the Philippines declared as a
university without having basic education (pre-school - high school)
curriculum and catering mainly to courses related to the health services
field. It was relocated to a nine-storey main building at the Cebu
Boardwalk in neighboring Mandaue City thus closing its old campus near
the then Cebu Doctors' Hospital (now Cebu Docs' University Hospital).
Cebu Institute of Technology-University
The Cebu Institute of Technology – University (CIT University) (formerly known as Cebu Institute of Technology) in the Philippines is a private non-sectarian academic institution, providing basic and higher education with a strong foundation in general and technological education.
CIT is the first higher educational institution (HEI) in the Visayas
and Mindanao classified as Category A (t). This places CIT as a mature
teaching institution under the CHED-IQUAME framework. IQUAME is
Institutional Quality Assurance Through Monitoring and Evaluation, a
system of higher education quality assurance and classification.
CIT is one of only nine schools nationwide awarded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as Center of Excellence in Information Technology Education.
